Abstract. This work describes the use of well known computer applications to enable smart home users to monitor and control their homes using customized documents. Middleware written in applescript and perl-cgi was used to integrate the computer applications with the OpenWebNet protocol used in home automation. The events triggered by the applications are easily log by web and mail servers to facilitate diagnostic operations and their archival. This software was tested on the implementation of “The Smart Door Project” to remotely manage door access, monitor the door and archive the events. One of the features is that the door opens after the user receives an e-mail with the magic words “Apriti Sesamo” in the subject field, and “Alibaba” in the text.

1. Introduction

With the evolution of home automation, there is an increase in complexity due to the large number of systems, modules, sensors, scenarios, displays, options, and features. Ideally, commands are simple clicks, but in smart homes there is a large variety of commands ranging from physical keys in walls close to appliances to remote virtual keys and gestures in mobile devices, plus many scenarios triggered by a variety of events. Therefore, there is a need for a well maintained documentation containing a detail list of instructions for the house on what to do during the opening or closing operations, when going to sleep or awakening, while enjoying the home theater, etc. This instructions must deal with many systems (lighting, irrigation, climate control, sound distribution, and others) and the several zones in each system, each with different settings. In addition, this instructions must be adapted for different users (kids, adults, and seniors).

ABSTRACT: Ternary command modules are common 2-module commands configured with 4-keys, UP, DOWN, STOP, and END. Using this configuration, a user is capable to send ternary numbers with many digits, the numbers are separated by pressing the END key. Using this method a user can address and control all devices in a home. Each ternary address specifies a scenario that is executed in the home controller. A single switch can control as many scenarios the user decides. When pressing a key once, in the wall switch, the command behaves in the normal way by the home controller toggling a device from OFF to ON, or ON to OFF. But, when pressing several keys in sequence the controller interprets the ternary number of a predefined scenario to execute. A controller can be programmed with more than 100 scenarios, therefore in principle one can program scenarios to control all devices in the home from a single switch.

Abstract. This work measures home automation implementations in terms of Comfort, Smartness, and Performance. These measures are easily computed from counting the loads, buttons, and scenarios present in home automation implementations. The works analyzes two novel automation programs to clarify these measures and to compare home automation implementations. We describe a novel use of available home controller to implement scenarios triggered by event sequences. We provide examples of real deployment of home controller programs that can be used in residential and commercial applications.

1 Introduction

Home automation (HA) implementations are diverse and difficult to compare because they use different technologies. The electrical wiring of homes depends on the town wiring code, electrical standards and construction cost. A simple house has loads and basic switches to control the loads. Loads are defined as lights or group of lights in a common circuit, motors, and appliances.

Abstract. This work describes the use of smart homes to assess the health and wellbeing of people by measuring and displaying their activity at home. This is accomplished by the use of motion sensors, switches, pulse counters and touch screen displays. Pulse counters keep track of events and paths. An event is the triggering of a sensor, and a path is the distance between two sensors. There are counters for measuring positive and negative activities. Activities like walking, pedaling a static bicycle, and showering are displayed hourly, daily, and monthly with the same displays used for metering water and electricity. The activity patterns show hours of quietness, sleeping time, time without activity and their interruptions, like waking up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. Several hours of continuos inactivity during the day may trigger a panic call in the burglar alarm central, requesting a call back.

Application Services for Smart-Home Documents, Andres Albanese (PDF)

Abstract- This work describes the use of application services to manage and control smart homes using documents written in text format. The documents are used to inquire and command the status of smart home devices in several home system for temperature regulation, water and electricity consumption. Applications services are computer scripts executed, on user request, from the menu bar or keyboard shortcuts, while an application is open. The user highlights a text contained in the document to identify the input command to control the devices in the home. Text editors, word processors, organizers and many other applications were tested, to highlight text, as inputs. Multiple inputs separated by commas are treated as a list of command sequences or scenarios. The scripts discover network parameters, device type, configuration, status, and syntax of the user request before executing the appropriate command. The scripts are generic to all homes and require no configuration, while the documents are specific to each smart home installation and they lists all the installed devices with available commands and other resources for the user may use to manage and control a home. Document templates are available for the user to customize commands using the available functions recognized by the scripts. This document is an example of a smart manual used by the author to control its smart home from its computer.

Le case di Firenze e Berkeley sono collegate per internet e gestite come se fossero sulla stessa LAN. I sensori di casa vengono usati per monitorare le attività delle persone, riconoscere quando una persona è in pericolo, e segnalare eventi anomali. Le automazioni sono usate per controllare il clima, mantenere le piante vive, e rinfrescare la casa quando si va in vacanza per vari mesi. Il progetto ricerca come la domotica può aiutare e creare una cartella clinica per monitorare è consigliare le persone in casa. La casa funziona automaticamente, ma si può gestire anche localmente e remotamente, il progetto sta evolvendo con l’integrazione del monitoraggio della casa e della salute delle persone in casa.

The figure above shows the AI Bus, The Energy Bus, The Auto Bus, and the AV Bus. The AI Bus is tha Burglar Alarm Bus optimize for security, ithas sensors, sirens, contacts, transponder interfaces. The Auto Bus has the scenario programmer, the commands modules, and lights and motor switches. The energy Bus has the Thermoregulation Central, and Touch Screen. The AV Bus has multimedia distributon. The power supplies of the burglar alarm and the automation systems have backup batteries that are kept charged by an isolated fotovoltaic systems.

The user subscribes to the following services: GSM network for cellular access, PSTN network for telephone access, DSL for Internet access, and Web Portal for home remote access and management..

The customer equipment in the home consists of:

First, the network gateways. The DSL Modem and Router, a gateway between the Internet and the Local Area Networks (Ethernet and Wi-Fi). The router enable access for personal devices like IPod Touch, PC and MAC to communicate with the home controller to manage devices connected to the automation bus and the cameras attached to the F452V . The F452V allows the user to access the home automation system through the internet.

Second, the local access servers. Web Video Server F452V to manage the video cameras, sends e-mails to the user about technical and alarm events, and communicates with the Portal. The MH200, a scenario programmer that manages only the devices on the SCS Automation Bus.

And third, the Alarm system with the central 3500GSM to control the devices on the SCS Alarm Bus and the SCS Automation Bus through the F422 interface. The Central 3500GSM enables the user access by telephone and GSM to arm and disarm the alarm system, and to execute open commands to control the devices on the automation bus.
